Washing Instructions for Organic Handkerchiefs Washing Organic Flannel Handkerchiefs Washing:Wash on the permanent press or gentle cycle with a warm wash and a warm rinse. Do not wash using hot water if you wish to keep the fabric soft and touchable. Use a mild detergent. Add a fabric softener to the rinse cycle. If you don’t use fabric softener in your washing machine, a dryer sheet can be added to the drying cycle. Flannel can be hung to dry or machine dried. If machine drying, remove promptly once the handkerchief is dry. Do not over dry or it will weaken the fabric. Drying on low heat helps to keep the handkerchiefs in good condition for a longer time. Ironing: If you removed the flannel hanky just after the drying cycle, you will probably not need to iron. However, if you do, you can iron flannel on the cotton setting. Tips for maintenance:Our organic flannel handkerchiefs should be washed with light colors. If the flannel begins to lose its softness, it could be fabric softener build up. Adding a half of a cup of clear vinegar during an extra rinse cycle should remove any residue that can cause the fabric to feel stiff. Flannel will create lint in the dryer so be sure to empty your lint trap regularly. Washing Organic Cotton Handkerchiefs: Washing: Wash with other light colored cotton fabrics only either on the permanent press or regular cycle with a warm wash and a warm rinse. Use an appropriate detergent of your choice. Place the handkerchiefs into the dryer or hang them on the clothesline. If you use the dryer, set the dryer temperature to warm and remove the hankies promptly when the cycle finishes. Ironing: Iron any wrinkles from the organic cotton fabric after the fabric dries. Use the cotton setting. Tips for maintenance:If you wish to bleach the handkerchiefs, only use the recommended amount of bleach as it can damage the fibers. Organic cotton items can shrink and wrinkle easily as there has never been an ‘anti-wrinkle’ chemical added to the fabric as in regular cotton fabrics. Therefore, ironing will almost always be necessary to keep your handkerchiefs looking their best.

The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is the worldwide leading textile processing standard for organic fibers, including ecological and social criteria, backed up by independent certification of the entire textile supply chain. The aim of the standard is to define world-wide recognized requirements that ensure organic status of textiles, from harvesting of the raw materials, through environmentally and socially responsible manufacturing up to labeling in order to provide a credible assurance to the end consumer. A textile product carrying the GOTS label grade ‘organic’ must contain a minimum of 95% certified organic fibers whereas a product with the label grade ‘made with organic’ must contain a minimum of 70% certified organic fibers. Environmental criteria from GOTS include that at all stages through the processing organic fiber products must be separated from conventional fiber products and must to be clearly identified. It also prohibits the use of critical inputs such as toxic heavy metals, formaldehyde, aromatic solvents, functional nano particles, genetically modified organisms (GMO) and their enzymes. Discharge printing methods using aromatic solvents and plastisol printing methods using phthalates and PVC are prohibited. The standard covers the processing, manufacturing, packaging, labeling, trading and distribution of all textiles made from at least 70% certified organic natural fibers. The final products may include, but are not limited to fiber products, yarns, fabrics, clothes and home textiles. The standard does not set criteria for leather products. Please note that the information about GOTS does not reflect all criteria of the standard and can therefore not be used for any official purpose.
